WorldAgent Direct
The Delta Vacations WorldAgent Direct website is a business-to-business (B2B) e-commerce platform enabling travel agents to book vacation packages for their clients. Despite its importance, the site faced significant usability and design challenges that hindered its effectiveness. Originally developed for Northwest Airlines prior to its acquisition by Delta in 2010, the site had not undergone major updates in over a decade. Its outdated interface and lack of mobile compatibility frustrated users, creating a clear need for modernization.
As a User Experience Designer, I joined Delta Vacations’ redesign initiative in late 2023 to help transform the site into a modern, responsive tool tailored to the needs of today’s travel agents. This case study explores the design process, challenges, anticipated outcomes, and lessons learned from this project.
Identifying the Problem
The WorldAgent Direct website suffered from several critical shortcomings:
- Outdated Design: The site’s aesthetic and functionality resembled early-2000s e-commerce platforms, creating a disconnect with the expectations of modern users. Travel agents described it as "out-of-date," which discouraged engagement.
- Lack of Mobile Responsiveness: The platform was designed exclusively for desktop use, limiting travel agents’ ability to work on the go. This hindered productivity and flexibility, two key requirements for the target audience.
- Legacy Constraints: As a product rooted in legacy systems from the Northwest Airlines era, the platform faced technical limitations that complicated updates and enhancements.
Delta Vacations recognized that these challenges reduced the site’s utility and, by extension, its value as a booking tool for travel agents. The overarching goal of the redesign was to inspire agents to engage with the platform more frequently, ultimately driving business growth.
Designing for a Modern User Experience
Researching and Insights
Although I did not conduct formal user research as a contractor, I relied heavily on insights provided by Delta Vacations’ product managers, subject matter experts, and software engineers. These stakeholders shared years of accumulated feedback from travel agents and internal users, highlighting specific pain points and areas for improvement. Product managers also provided strategic guidance based on market research and industry trends, and engineers outlined the technical constraints and opportunities within Delta’s updated Angular technology framework.

In addition to these resources, I conducted informal testing with personal contacts, gathering candid feedback that helped refine early design concepts.
Prototyping
When I joined the project, the IT team had already developed a proof-of-concept prototype to secure funding for the redesign. Building on this foundation, I:
- Created mockups for key pages, incorporating modern design principles.
- Used AI tools to generate visually appealing graphics that aligned with Delta's branding.
- Scripted interactions and developed refined prototypes to illustrate the complete user journey.
I utilized Figma, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Firefly to design responsive interfaces that would work across devices in order to meet the needs of travel agents working in a mobile-first world.

Anticipated Outcomes
Although the redesigned site is still in the early stages of deployment, feedback from stakeholders and travel agents has been overwhelmingly positive.
- Improved Engagement: Travel agents expressed relief that the site was being updated and liked the responsive design approach, which promises to improve their ability to work flexibly.
- Enhanced Usability: Stakeholders highlighted how the redesign aligns with other Delta Web sites, creating a more cohesive user experience.
- Future Growth Potential: By addressing long-standing pain points, the redesign is expected to increase platform usage and drive booking activity over time.
Lessons Learned and Future Directions
- Legacy Systems Require Strategic Planning: Redesigning platforms rooted in legacy systems is inherently complex and requires close collaboration between designers, engineers, and stakeholders.
- User Validation Is Essential: While anecdotal feedback is valuable, it is no substitute for formal usability testing. Validating designs with real users ensures that the final product truly meets their needs.
- Stakeholder Alignment Drives Success: Large-scale projects require buy-in from a broad base of stakeholders, particularly in large organizations like Delta. Responsive design is an essential feature, but its success depends on a strong business case and sustained support.
Call for Usability Testing
To fully realize the potential of the redesigned platform, comprehensive usability testing will be essential. Observing travel agents as they interact with the live site under real-world conditions will provide critical insights into its effectiveness. Incorporating analytics tools to track user behavior and establishing feedback loops will enable iterative improvements, ensuring the platform continues to meet user needs.
The redesign of the WorldAgent Direct website is a major step forward, but it is only the beginning. By committing to ongoing research and refinement, Delta Vacations can transform the platform into a trusted tool for travel agents and a significant driver of business growth.
Closing Thoughts
This project highlights the value of user-centered design, particularly for B2B platforms that serve as critical business tools. By addressing long-standing issues and focusing on modern usability principles, Delta Vacations has laid the groundwork for a platform that not only meets but exceeds the expectations of its users. With thoughtful deployment and a focus on continuous improvement, the redesigned site has the potential to become a cornerstone of Delta Vacations’ success.
